Dangers of Splenda: Can Splenda Kill?
Its official: Splenda has replaced aspartame as the most used artificial sweetener in foods and beverages. More and more artificial sweeteners are being used today as consumers want products that taste good but don’t pack the calories that are associated with sugar. Aspartame, which used to be used in most artificially sweetened items, was basically forced out of popularity and products because the public became aware of the fact that it can be the cause of many chronic illnesses. James Bowen, a physician, biochemist and survivor of aspartame poisoning is doing his best to warn about Splenda and its implications on those who consume it.
One Doctor’s Take: Splenda Is Bad for Us from the Inside Out
Dr. Bowen says of Splenda, “Splenda/sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar; a chlorocarbon. Common chlorocarbons include carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethelene and methylene chloride, all deadly. Chlorine is nature’s Doberman attack dog, a highly excitable, ferocious atomic element employed as a biocide in bleach, disinfectants, insecticide, WWI poison gas and hydrochloric acid.” This seems a bit extreme, but when you step back and think about it, you do have to wonder what this product does when we ingest it continually. In fact, many of us are ingesting several items every day that have Splenda in it.
Dr. Bowen has made a lot of people scratch their head and think about exactly why they are ingesting Splenda and exactly what it is doing to our bodies. The doctor points out that chlorocarbons, which is what Splenda is, is not nutritionally compatible with the metabolic processes that are ongoing in our bodies. Using very scientific means of researching, the doctor has come to find and believes wholeheartedly that the arrangements of the atoms in Splenda adversely affects human metabolism.
Dr. James Bowen believes that the chlorocarbons cannot be excreted from our bodies and that will continue to cause damage to our metabolism and eventually if we keep ingesting it, to our internal organs. Bowen believes that the liver is not able to detoxify our body of Splenda because the chlorocarbons in Splenda damage the hepatocytes, which are the liver’s metabolic cells.
Dr. Bowen hasn’t come with up with these beliefs without data to back it up. In fact, there have been test animals that have ingested Splenda and all of them had swollen livers and calcified kidneys. As if these findings weren’t overwhelming enough, it is known that the brain and nervous system are susceptible to metabolic toxicities and can be damaged by the chemicals that are Splenda. It is thought that something as seemingly simple and harmless and Splenda could cause a breakdown in the nervous system, affecting genetics and even immune function. It is also thought that because of the breakdown that chlorocarbon poisoning can cause cancer, birth defects, and total immune system destruction.
Dr. James Bowen says, “We should not be fooled again into accepting the safety of a toxic chemical on the blessing of the FDA and saturation advertising. In terms of potential long term human toxicity we should regard sucralose with its chemical cousin DDT, the insecticide now outlawed because of its horrendous long term toxicities at even minute trace levels in human, avian, and mammalian tissues.”
In short, Splenda is something that we all need to think about before we ingest it. It’s regarded as an artificial sweetener. In most instances, artificial is not a term that has a positive connotation. Why should it be any different with the things that we ingest? We don’t want to think that there are things out there that are FDA approved that aren’t safe, but when you think about aspartame you have to know that there are things out there that just aren’t good for us. We have to be discerning consumers and think about our health long term.

I have been using Splenda for two years and did not put 2 and 2 together to realize all the health problems i have been having is caused by Splenda. I have been in severe stomache pain, mega bowel problems, no energy, blood vessels around nose rosey red. I have gone to my doctor and had tests but they could not find anything. On my own i began eliminating different foods and it wasnt until i stopped using Diet Rite ZERO products and Splenda in baking that i saw any improvement. My stomach pains was so severe they would wake me at night and i could not help but groan in pain. One day while driving i was in so much pain i had to pull off on the side of the road and get out of my car. I found myself in the road and did not even realize it. I didnt know or care that i was in the road, i was only trying to get some relief by moving. Splenda is POISON. No human should ever take this product.
I am really worried after reading all this about Splenda. About 5 or 6 years ago I started using Splenda in my coffee because I used way too much sugar and thought that I would lose weight using Splenda. I started using 4 packets of Splenda to each cup of coffee I would drink. I normally drank 1 cup of coffee a day. But, since 2007, I have been drinking 2 to 3 cups a day. I am EXTREMELY worried about my health now! I do have some stomache pain and definitely bloating. I have headaches behind the eyes. I feel like my eyesight is rapidly decreasing. I also just feel like I am slowly changing mentally. I just thought this was all coming from old age. But, I am only 40! Is there any way I can know for sure if the Splenda has caused this damage? AND, will my condition improve if I stop or is the damage done?
After 6 mos. of being sick, feeling terrible, and even having to go to ER with chest pains, I’m am already feeling 100% better just two days after quitting all use of Splenda and products which contain it.Headaches, gas, bowel pain, back pain, dimming vision, muscle pain, bloating, liver pain, dizziness, foggy thinking/forgetfulness, anxiety/depression/irritability weigh gain all led me to believe I was on the slippery slope to death. Then an attack of hives and angioedema xs 10 days caused me to eliminate meds and foods systematically for days. Nothing stopped the worsenening allergic rx until I stopped the 2 Splenda in my one cup of morning coffee. Like magic, within hours I began to feel as if a poison was being removed from my diet. Today only 24 hours+ afterward, I walked 3 miles easily and felt wonderful again with only some aches left. I will touch no product which include this toxic poison and am warning everyone about it.
It is sad and shocking to realize that for the love of money our government and those who represent the American people would allow corporations to poison us to death. It is becoming all to clear to me that the FDA is a toothless whore. I do not feel that the evils of governments will change until the world is destroyed and we have a new earth. Human nature is constantly destructive BECAUSE we have all been subjected to mortality and by nature we are children of wrath.
I tried decided to try Splenda because diabetes runs in my family. Perhaps a ‘sugar free’ alternative would be a good idea. I quickly found out after using it twice that I have a potentially fatal allergy to sucralose. My extended family joked about it until someone ‘forgot’ to tell me that a Splenda-brown sugar blend was used to sweeten baked beans at a barbecue. Within minutes it looked like I had been punched in the eyes due to swelling. Now no one in my family uses sucralose. My previous allergic symptoms were: red dots everywhere that looked like goosebumps, hives, severe intestinal cramps, disoriented thinking, loss of balance, and shock.
I have been having stomach cramps and other misc. pains that I believe are related to Splenda. I am discontinuing and going back to cane sugar which can’t be any worse.
I have used Splenda since Oct.2008. Since I then I have had cancer, stomach problems, headaches, and some other medical problems. I am normally a healthy person. I was diagnosed with diabetes in OCT.2008. I stared using Splenda in my diet thinking that it was a healthy choice for me. But after reading this website I will be talking to my Doctor and not using this produt any more.
Thank You.

Has anyone else had low white blood cell counts? I have been using Splenda in my coffee for years and wonder if the two could be related.
I Started using Splenda back in November of 2008, then about 2 mouth later in January of 2009 Splenda has been giving me horrible problems. First it happen on first day of January at night I drink a bottle of diet rite witch that had Splenda of course! then the next morning when I woke up MY FACE WAS SOOOO! RED IT’S LIKE I GOT SUNBURN! IT BURN REALLY BAD! plus in Include I got the flu cold by using Splenda an it took a long time for me to recovery back to good health. Then a week or two later I drink instant breakfast that had Splenda in it! I had horrible gas! it felt like I could knock out bunch of people out with that toxin gas:-( then the next day I got constipation by Splenda. Then as time went by my health was really bad an I mean Bad. I know it’s long, but it was so true. I finally quit splenda:-) but I didn’t know what to use next because I didn’t really wanted to go back with sugar, now I not saying I don’t hate sugar but I just wanted to have good mount of sugar per day. So I found to best healthy all natural sweeteners.
1. Stevia a herb that’s been use in South America for 1,500 years and there been no problems and Japan been using it as a sweetener for more then 30 years an once again no problem. Sadly FDA found Stevia to be safe but due to the Aspartame company they stop Stevia by giving it fake studies to show how dangerous it is an say that Aspartame was much more safer then Stevia. So if u found problems with Steiva on the web! Don’t listen to them unless if u are on Aspartame side. Plus if u are going to use Stevia I recommend u use the real leaf by growing it, it well taste much more fresher and it has a lots of health benefit then the white powder stuff.
2. Xylitol a natural sugar alcohol that’s a another great alternative to sugar and those chemical sweeteners. Plus Xylitol looks like sugar and taste like sugar, deadpans on Ur taste buns? Best then about Xylitol is it occurs in fruits and berries, plus are body’s produces up to at least 15g of Xylitol each day. Now here are two links for two sweeteners 1.http://www.mydailymoment.com/diet_and_fitness/healthy_eating/natural_healthy_and_sweet_the_benefits_of_stevia.php?page=2
2.http://www.myxylitol.com/
Just highlight them an copy it then put it to address bar, then just click or press enter. Now for the second link go to site then click on Xylitol information.
Thank u for reading and hope this information helps for people who don’t want to use sugar.
Splenda spikes my blood pressure 25+ points … causes headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, fainting … probably due to the increase in BP. Splenda is in no doubt POISON.

I started using Splenda several years ago when it came out in the store. I use it in tea, cereal, on fruit, etc. I started noticing my vision dimming but didn’t think anything of it because I have been in graduate school and attributed it to studying for long hours. Then, I noticed problems with memory and concentration, and again, attributed it to studying and stress of school. I was shocked to read the side effects on this web site and have experienced many of them myself. I am too scared to use it now, so I think I’ll switch to Stevia, or something else that is safe. Thanks for the info.
I have cut back on using Splenda but with pre-diabetes I sporadically use yoghurt and sometimes small amounts from the large bag. Every time I use it I wake up with visible bags under my eyes and tinnitus and blurry vision with halos around lights. Taking vitamin C when using Splenda helps minimize symptoms and taking vitamin C, magnesium, alpha lipoic acid and fish oil helps if symptoms occur and these all lower blood pressure!
A Eur. study showed Splenda raises glucose levels over extended use. Alice
Well, a lot of horror stories here, but I have used a lot of Splenda in my coffee, in grapefruit juice, and occasionally on fruit, for about 2 or 3 years. I haven’t noticed any adverse symptoms or health problems- in fact, in the last several months that I have greatly increased the fruits and veggies in my diet, I actually feel much healthier! On the other hand, those who warn against this artificial combination of sucrose and chlorine do have a point when they say that FDA approval is meaningless, and that profits, especially in the U.S., take precedence over the health of the commoners. I generally don’t believe in the ingestion of lab-created concoctions, so I plan to wean myself from Splenda and replace with stevia perhaps. Because… maybe the Splenda effects just haven’t hit me yet…
I was hospitalized this weekend after using Splenda (sucralose) for about a month. I had been feeling increasingly run down and tired, with a tight, tense lower jaw and trouble getting to sleep. I even woke up one morning with jaw pain and the left side of my face numb. Last week I became nauseated, weaker, more exhausted and had unbelieveably foul gas with bloating and “percolating” lower gut. By Saturday I had trouble even walking, had shaking chills, all over excruciating body restlessness, and extreme lower gut percolation with horrid gas. I was taken to the ER and had to have ativan and morphine to relieve the discomfort. My blood pressure was really low. I felt better after a few bags of IV fluid and went home the next day. My blood work, abdominal xrays, and stool sample were all inconclusive. The only change in my habits was the Splenda. I had a bit in some oatmeal after I came home and began to feel ill again. Then I made the connection, got rid of the Splenda and began to feel better. I will never use an artificial sweetner again.
I had a severe bout of diarrhea in September which continued every day through January, 2011. Originally I thought it was a virus or food poisoning or IBS. But this was totally different and did not respond to the usual foods that stop diarrhea and when the diarrhea did not go away after a few months, I went to the Gastroenterologist and took a battery of tests which were all negative and started keeping a food diary – eliminating almost anything that I thought was giving me any adverse reactions.
But then, out of the blue I started to realize that I felt worse after drinking decafinated tea which had Splenda added to it. I decided to stop using the Splenda for a few days and started to see some improvement. I then gave my 1000 unit box to my husband who tried using it. After two days, he had severe diarrhea – so we threw out the box of Splenda. Now after being off Splenda for about 3 weeks, my diarrhea has completely stopped. Never would I have thought it could have been the Splenda causing this.
Please please tell me if anyone has had these medical problems…I use splenda everyday, alot of the stuff, in fact familyy jokes because I have have my big container of my own splenda everywhere I go!
Sudden onset of angiedema(swelling) ER x3 times, now carry an epi-pen so my throat won’t close.
Muscle/joint pain so bad, especially when I wake up and try to walk around, I am 50 and feel 80..it takes me awhile to get going due to additional fatique.
Red veins on my nose with pain inside nostril, no visable problem there..painful sores in my mouth that take forever to heal, and every morning, my lower face, mouth, lips, swollen!
I have been to allergy specialists, nothing, a dental pathologist, no cancer thank God!
I even though Gluten was the problem…
Spelnda I have been using for a long time, but really increased use over the past year with all these problems started to happen….good it be??
I have stopped right now, but hope to hear from someone!!
I have been using Splenda like 4 years now, I became celiac like a year ago, and have several kidney pains, I have to go to bathroom a lot! I even thought that I was eating too much proteins and my kidneys were irritated by the acid, I swicht to vegan, and now I understand that if you really want to be healthy you have to stop eating artifitial sweetners, I tried Stevia but get me so anxious that I ate a lot, it didn´t work for me.
I have only used Sucralose on one occasion and within half an hour experienced uncontrollable explosive diarrhoea. As Ididn’t feel unwell or sick with this experience I deduced I could not be ill or have a bug and then thought about the dessert I had made using Sucralose. I ‘googled’ Splenda and was horrified to read all the scarey reports. How does this stuff remain on the market? If it were a drug causing all these problems it would never obtain a licence.
I began using Splenda about two years ago and found myself using it more and more. Last week I was eating out with my daughter and she was stunned to see that I put 8 envelopes into one capuccino. I put 5 or 6 tablespoons on my oatmeal in the morning. For around two years I have been experiencing constant dizziness whenever I change directions, or stand up and four months ago I began having brief “seizures” (one per month and always while driving!). Just today I began looking at reputable information on the Internet and have found that both dizziness and seizures are amongst the very numerous reported side effects of using Splenda. I just threw out my box of Splenda. I’m still going to have a brain scan next week, but I suspect that Splenda is the culprit.
I started eating “NO SUGAR ADDED” ice cream with in January ( DID NOT KNOW IT HAD SPLENDA IN IT) not long after having the flu. Then it seemed that the flu symtoms kept coming back. Went to the doctor in March and he gave me an antibiotic after I tols him what all the sytoms were about and how they kept coming back. He said I had a viris in my intenstios from the January flu that I had. Then I seemed to do better. Then every once in awhile the flu symptoms came back diarrea, bloating and just feeling like “hell”. I’ve been to the docotr 4 times, and went back to the doctor last week after feeling real bad again with the bloating, diarrea and hellish feeling….he said I had IBS. Had a bowl of no sugar ice cream Sunday night, and Monday…the all “Hell” broke losse again. looked at what I’ve been eating over the past six months and noticed the Splenda logo on the ice cream box, and noticed in the small print “can cause laxative effect” . Went on line and googled Splenda…and WOW that’s what has been playing hell with me for six months now. Going back to the doctor today to show him what all this has been about. Today I feel fine..not IBS!!!! This will help him in the future…I’m sure when other people have the same issues! This product should be banned form any foods!!!!!!
I have been using regular Splenda and Fiber Splenda for several years now. I usually use two packets in my coffee, (3 cups a day) in my tea, and also use it for cereal or anything else I eat that needs sweetening..I like sweet. I too thought that because it was made with sugar, according to the ads, that it was a safe sweetner but after reading all of the negative comments, I am inclined not to use it any more. I am 61 yrs old, 140 lbs. and one thing I notice with my routine blood tests for cholesterol is that my sugar levels are up above normal range. My family has no history of type 2 diabetes and I am not overweight…..the only sweetner I use is Splenda. I have to question if this has affected my glucose levels. Has anyone else had that problem? I also have had problems with bloating and gas…again going to stop using it altogether and see if these symptoms go away.
I have been using Splenda for over 2 years now, with no effect on my health. Because of warnings on the web I looked into hospitalization data of Splenda patients and could find nothing. I looked for death rates of Splenda users and again could find nothing. But I did find studies of waste water; it has (relatively) a lot of splenda in ppm because it goes through your body with no chemical reaction and remains unchanged. Unlike Aspartamine and other artificial sweeteners in soda drinks, Splenda is considered safe for pregnant women. However, like other cases with diet change or unknown pathogens, symptoms of illness are often attributed to food items without medical verification. I am watching to see if actual evidence of Splenda as a cause of illness is reported by Medical Journals. There is strong commercial conflict over competing sugar sustitutes.
Splenda does not contain Chlorine molcules. In all molecules, the change of any one atom changes the chemical action of the molecule. Even the mirror image of a molecule acts differently. Ask a Chemist. As a Chloride it is in all salt, and is required by the body for good health. Ask a Doctor..
I have to ecco what a lot of people are saying here. I have minor liver damage that doesn’t effect me generally. My liver functions are normal. On the occasions that I have had a lot of Splenda….say like in a cake. I get bowel changes, my stool gets lighter (a very bad liver sign) fatique, headache. Which goes away when I stop ingesting the stuff. But it takes about a week. For those who doubt the science,THERE ARE STUDIES that show liver and kidney enlargement. This doesn’t happen unless the organs are responding to an assult and possibally being damaged. Your liver can heal itself, but your kidney do not, enough damage and you die. No studies have been done on the long term effect on the brain. But the FDA says its ok to ingest. Chemical companys that create their research data are always suspect in my book. It’s all about money. Get the chemicals out of all our food.
i used splenda because i was trying to loose weight.in the time of using splenda my blood counts were not good and i have problems with my liver. scince i stoped splenda my blood counts have been good. but my liver is never going to be better its damaged.
Don’t be so quick to blame Splenda! Everything we consume
has chemicals that are harmful to the human body. Everything in moderation. I feel mediactions can be just
as harmful, read their side affects. My liver has been
damaged over my seventy years from medications. This
Fact; is for me, very hard to swallow! Not Splenda, which
I have used for several years. Enjoy!
A few months ago, I fell in love with Kroger yogurt. I started eating anywhere from 8-16 containers of that stuff a day. I’ve been having serious bladder issues, swelling in my gut, malabsorbtion of food, & stomach pain ever since then. Turns out the yogurt is sweetened with sucralose. I’m only 13, so these problems can’t be caused by old age or anything like that. Sucralose is POISON! I won’t go anywhere near “sugar free”, “diet”, or “lite” products EVER again!
I use Splenda all the time I am type 2 diabetic and I have never had any problems at all
I had difficulty breathing, swallowing ,sinus presser ,ringing in the ear, I thought I had allergies. I tried to eliminate dairy, wheat, soy even tried pets. Purchase an air purifer, humidifier, netting pot, and many nasal sprays. Nothing seamed to help. It was always at least an annoyance to a panic that couldn’t breathe. I also had many other symptoms. Called the company to ask why there are no warnings. Reason they gave was, I was the first to report any symptoms. REALLY!!!! There has to be something done about this product!
I have been a big user of Splenda (sucralose) for many years. About 7 years ago, I started to experience strange symptoms that most doctors could not diagnose and considered very rare. It started with lip numbness, swelling of the tongue, stiff face and neck muscles, and eventually, complete loss of speach. Botox injections have not restored my voice nor many of of other symptoms. I stopped using Splenda about 2 weeks ago and am feeling much better. Each day I notice an improvement. My tongue is more normal and my face muscles are softened. A bit of my voice seems to be coming back. Has anybody else experienced a similar problem, possibly caused by Splenda?
Almost all of these stories are blowing my mind.
I have yet to have any health problems due to using Splenda.
I suppose life is a lot easier once you blame all of your difficulties in life on a a artificial sweetener.
